"Viv and Les have been reluctant neighbors in the middle of nowhere for 40 years, and are feeling their age. All the rest of the homesteaders/trappers/back-to-the-landers/hermits who lived in the area have given up and left, or died. When Viv arrives at Lester's cabin on Christmas with a peace offering, she finds him preparing to make a quick exit from his aging struggles via suicide."
